Privacy policy

In short: we do not collect your personal information. Your calculations stay on your device.

Who we are

CalcTortoise is operated by KRD Technologies, India.

What we do not collect

  • There are no accounts, sign-ups or forms that ask for your name, email or phone.
  • The figures you type into a calculator are worked out in your own browser. They are not sent to us or stored on any server.
  • There is no advertising and there are no tracking cookies. The only analytics tool is the page-view counter from Cloudflare described below. No other analytics, advertising or tracking tool from any other company runs on our pages.
  • The site does keep a few small settings in your own browser so that it can remember your choices. They are listed in full below, and none of them is sent to us.

What stays on your device

To remember your choices, the site keeps a few small items in your own browser. Two of them are cookies. The others are kept in your browser's "local storage" or "session storage", which is a small notebook that only your browser can read. These items hold your settings and things you typed yourself. They are never sent to us or to anyone else, none of them is used to follow you around the web or to show you ads, and the site works without them. You can see and delete all of them in your browser's site-data settings at any time. If you do, the site simply forgets your choices. Cloudflare's page-view counter (see below) stores nothing in your browser, so it does not appear in this list.

Cookies and other items this site keeps in your browser
NameKindWhat it remembersHow long
geoCookieGlobal pages only: “IN” or “US” when your connection looks like it is from India or the US, so a banner can offer that version of the site.24 hours
ccCookieThe country version you picked with the India / US / Global switch, so the banner stops suggesting one.1 year
geo-dismissedLocal storageThat you closed the country banner.Until you clear it
chart-view, spend-chart-view, budget-chart-viewLocal storageThe chart view you picked on the calculators, in the Expense Tracker and in the Household Budget.Until you clear it
curLocal storageThe currency sign you chose on the global pages.Until you clear it
loans:in, loans:us, loans:glLocal storageThe loans you saved with “Save to compare”: the name, amount, rate, tenure and fee you entered.Until you clear it
spend-overridesLocal storageExpense Tracker: a payee name as the tracker reads it (capital letters, reference numbers removed) and the category you chose for it, for example “JUICE BAR” and “Eating out”. Never the statement itself, the amounts or the dates.Until you clear it, or with “Clear everything on this device” on that page
household-budgetLocal storageHousehold Budget: the take-home pay, city type, rent or EMI, family size and any line you changed. If you used the averages from the Expense Tracker, those monthly averages by category are kept too, never individual transactions.Until you clear it, or with “Clear everything on this device” on that page
budget-seedSession storageThe monthly averages the Expense Tracker passes to the Household Budget page when you tap “Use these numbers in my budget”.Until you close the tab

The geo cookie is set only on the global pages (not on the India or US pages) and never for search-engine crawlers. Our host, Cloudflare, notices which country your connection is from when it sends the page, and the page then writes "IN" or "US" into this cookie so that a banner can offer the matching version. Nobody is moved to another page automatically. We do not keep your country anywhere else.

Page-view statistics (Cloudflare Web Analytics)

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count how many people open each page and how fast our pages load. It helps us see which calculators are used and which pages are slow. Cloudflare, who also host this site, adds a small script to our pages for this. The script is loaded fromstatic.cloudflareinsights.com.

What it records, as Cloudflare describes it: the address of the page, the website you came from (if any), timing numbers that show how quickly the page loaded, and rough details such as your country, browser and type of device. It does not record what you type or anything shown on the page. Cloudflare says it does not log the part of an address after a "?", which matters for share links, because the figures in a share link come after the "?".

According to Cloudflare, this tool does not use cookies or any storage in your browser, does not fingerprint you, and does not keep your IP address (it is discarded when your request reaches the Cloudflare server nearest to you). Cloudflare also says it does not track individual people across the different websites it serves. We checked on our own pages and found that the script sets no cookie and no local-storage or session-storage item.

The script runs on every page, including the Expense Tracker and the Household Budget. On those pages too it records only the page address and timings, never your statement or your budget numbers, which never leave your browser. It is not loaded for visitors in the European Union, as Cloudflare detects it. We use these numbers only to see which pages are used and how fast they load. We do not use them for advertising and we do not use them to identify you. If you block scripts from static.cloudflareinsights.com in your browser, the site works exactly the same.

Expense Tracker and your statements

When you add a PhonePe or bank statement to the Expense Tracker, the file is read inside your own browser tab. It is not uploaded, and nothing from it is sent to us or anyone else. If a PDF needs a password, the password is used only to open the file and is never saved. Close the tab and the transactions are gone. Only the payee name and the category you pick for it (for example "Rent") are remembered in your browser, so you do not have to pick it again. The table above shows exactly what is kept. Use Clear everything on this device on that page to remove it.

Household Budget

The numbers you type into the Household Budget (pay, rent or EMI, and the amounts for each line) are remembered only in your own browser, on this device, so the page opens as you left it. They are never sent to us or anyone else. If you use the averages from the Expense Tracker, they pass between the two pages inside your browser tab, and the monthly averages (never individual transactions) are then remembered on this device together with the rest of your budget. Use Clear everything on this device on the budget page to remove what is remembered.

Share links

When you use Copy link or Share on WhatsApp, the figures you entered are written into the web address so the person you send it to sees the same result. Anyone with the link can see those figures, so share it only with people you choose. Sending through WhatsApp is covered by WhatsApp's own privacy policy. Cloudflare's page-view counter does not log the figures in the link (see "Page-view statistics" above).

Hosting

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical information such as your IP address and browser type in order to deliver pages and protect the site from attacks. This is governed by Cloudflare's privacy policy. We do not use this information to identify you.

Your rights in India (DPDP Act, 2023)

Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 you may ask to see the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and raise a grievance with us. If you are not satisfied with our reply you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India. We collect almost no personal data, so there is usually little to show or delete.

Grievances

Our Grievance Team handles privacy complaints and requests. Write to [email protected]. We will reply within 30 days.

Children

The site is meant for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18, and in the US not from children under 13 (COPPA).

For readers in the United States

We do not sell or share personal information. The site is not directed to children under 13. California residents may ask us what personal information we hold about them; because we collect almost none, the answer will usually be nothing. Use the grievance contact above.

Links to other websites

Some pages link to official and other websites. Their privacy practices are their own; please read their policies.

Changes to this policy

If we ever add any other analytics, advertising or anything else that handles personal data, we will update this page before it starts, and say what is collected, why, and how you can opt out. The same applies if we ever turn on affiliate links: this policy and a clear disclosure next to each such link will be in place first. The date at the bottom shows when the policy last changed.
